Anxiety Disorders are the most common mental health problem in Australia. It is estimated that 25% of our population suffers from anxiety disorders, but less than one quarter of those receive treatment. If untreated, anxiety may lead to depression, alcohol and substance misuse or other co-morbid conditions. Thousands of people suffer in silence, are referred to inappropriate treatments or are too embarrassed to ask for help. Fortunately, anxiety can be effectively treated and managed with non-drug treatments.

This seminar will allow you to immediately implement the best behavioural techniques to treat your clients with anxiety disorders. You will be able to give your clients tools to view their anxiety from a new perspective and help them face their fear for the first time.

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) are the most effective evidence-based treatments for treating generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), panic, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), PTSD and phobias. Using these approaches, you will directly address the behaviour that causes anxiety and see immediate results in your clients!

ERP targets the main anxiety maintenance behaviours; avoidance, reassurance seeking, and distraction. In this seminar, you will learn how to apply ERP techniques that will challenge your clients to change their behaviour and see results that are hard to achieve with traditional talk therapy. You will also learn how to mobilise treatment resistant clients with CBT and ERP techniques, and help them become unstuck.

Join Patrick McGrath, Ph.D. for one of the most meaningful seminars you'll ever attend. Enjoy Dr. McGrath's humour as he speaks from clinical experience with case studies, videos and personal therapy examples that are guaranteed to help you immediately improve treatment outcomes.

The Real Life Adaptation of DBT: Make It Work Effectively for Your Client

Continuing Education Points:

Australian Association of Social Workers: The events attract double CPD points, i.e. 2 points per hour, for AASW members (14 points).

Australian Psychological Society: APS Members can accrue 7 CPD hours by participating in this activity. (# 12-20)

Australian Counsellors Association (ACA): Double points apply.

Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA): PACFA Members can accrue 7 CPD hours by participating in this activity.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy is a robust treatment that can be applied across clinical settings and client populations with great success. This training will help you focus on individual and group DBT techniques and to increase your confidence and skill while delivering this comprehensive model.

The methodology of DBT has been found through both practice and research to go beyond treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder and to be useful with a variety of other issues as well.  Practitioners are using DBT to help treat individuals with a wide range of mental health issues including, but not limited to Borderline Personality Disorder, anxiety disorders, impulse control, eating disorders, depression, anger, drug and alcohol misuse and complex co-morbid conditions. DBT treats the clients that we find most difficult to treat in private and public practice. Take home practical skills in deploying DBT to your most difficult-to-treat clients.

Known as a third-wave cognitive therapy, DBT moves away from the strict change strategies found in traditional treatments. In DBT, the therapist and the client balance these traditional change strategies with acceptance and mindfulness. It’s the constant back and forth movement between acceptance and change that makes DBT unique.  More and more practitioners have started to use DBT techniques in their practice and work settings  in flexible ways rather than in a traditional way in order to fit their clients’ needs.  This training highlights the evidence that supports these flexible adaptations.

No prerequisite is required, and you can attend this training even if you have not attended any introductory training on DBT.

This Seminar is designed especially for: Counsellors, Psychologists, Social Workers, Drug & Alcohol Counsellors, Therapists, Marriage & Family Therapists, Case Managers, Mental Health Professionals, Nurses, School Counsellors and Mental Health NGOs.

Introduction to Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy for Mental Health Workers - 2 Day Workshop

This workshop will provide participants with an introduction to Cognitive and Behaviour Therapies (CBT) relevant to working with consumers who have mental health issues.  The historical and theoretical foundations of CBT will be reviewed.  Learning processes relevant to the onset and maintenance of psychological disorders will be explained with examples drawn mainly from the high prevalence disorders. The implications of these for effective behavioural intervention will be discussed.  Relevant cognitive processes will also be explored along with basic strategies for shaping thinking that supports mental health.

Case material will be used to demonstrate the ways in which behavioural and cognitive strategies can be combined in effective treatment for a range of disorders.  CBT approaches to conceptualising these disorders will be discussed.  Participants will also be provided with an overview of more recent developments and modifications of traditional CBT (eg. an introduction to dialectical, acceptance and mindfulness-based approaches).

This two-day workshop is suitable for anyone employed in a supportive capacity with consumers who have a mental illness (eg. NGO support workers and other health workers).

Engaging Clients Who Are Hard to Engage

The techniques you will learn in this workshop will be useful in avoiding generating resistance on the part of the client, and will lead to positive client outcomes.  They are easily integrated into any treatment model and are complementary to your knowledge of Motivational Interviewing.

First, the issue of why people change and why, at times, they resist change will be explored.  The many meanings of what is commonly referred to as resistance will be explored..Your understanding should then lead you in developing approaches to managing resistance. The tool box of techniques provided in this workshop will assist you in gracefully and eloquently managing client reactions.

The techniques presented in this workshop will improve your confidence in working with mandatory clients; those who are in denial or those who treat you with the "I don't know" answers or with silence.  Hopefully, you will be able to move quicker into addressing critical issues, and pseudo co-operation will be avoided.  Not only the treatment time will be decreased, but you will avoid being frustrated, stressed or burnt out as your ability to avoid futile battles with clients will improve.

Understanding and Responding to Personality Disorders I

Individuals with Personality Disorders are among the most difficult to treat of all people with psychiatric disturbances.  They may be impulsive, unstable, non-compliant, manipulative and self-harming.  Far too often such people are managed by under resourced services without the support or guidance of the mental health system. This situation results in poor case management, inadequate resolutions and repeated crises causing cost blowouts and stretching resources even more.

TATRA Corporate and Allied Health Training Services has developed a workshop which will foster an understanding of the specific challenges associated with caring for individuals with personality disorders. This is an interactive and fun workshop.  Case studies, quizzes, group tasks and movie illustrations will be used to make this not only a valuable learning experience but also an enjoyable one. The content will include a definition of personality disorders and their types, how they develop, the underlying causes behind each and, most importantly, strategies for managing them.

The Introduction to Healing Addiction ; The Vulnerability Model of Recovery

Too often professionals become discouraged or cynical about the course of addiction. They see some people return over and over again. What they do not see are those who have recovered and never return to the treatment facility; those who continue on their own attending support groups, and/or seeking out private therapy. These people can teach us a great deal. Whatever they have done that works, tells us what works. Whatever process they have gone through, tells us what process is necessary. Whatever learning they have done tells us what learning we must do.

This workshop will examine the nature of addiction and recovery.  It will focus on a unified theory and treatment model that deepens recovery through emotional education and development.  It will be based on presenter's experience from her own private practice where she successfully treated many clients who have fully recovered.

This workshop places addiction within common human experience and it focuses on  ways to address addiction in the living examples of people who have recovered.
Program will cover:
  • The Cycle of Addiction
  • Models of Addiction
  • Denial
  • The Cycle of Recovery
  • The Vulnerability Model Of Recovery
  • The Choices
  • Wilfulness and Will-lessness
It is a 1-day interactive workshop with case studies and group work.

Join author, expert and international speaker Dr. Leslie Pedersen-Lundt, MD, and learn about the latest findings, treatment, side effects, co-morbidity and psychosocial therapies for bipolar spectrum. You will leave the day with a deep understanding of how to integrate psychotherapy and medications - and take home proven strategies, techniques and tools to keep your clients on the road to wellness.

With the recent dramatic increase in the use of “bipolar disorder” as a diagnostic label, it is critical that mental health practitioners, counsellors and all clinicians understand how to identify clients with bipolar disorder and how to differentiate them from those with Uni-polar Depression, ADHD, anxiety disorders and borderline personality.

No longer are medications the sole ingredient of treatment for Bipolar Disorder. Learn about three bipolar-specific psychotherapies which have been shown to improve clients’ outcomes more than medications alone—and how to integrate them with your current psychotherapy approaches. Dr. Lundt will help you practice the use of these techniques and tools in a lively day of laughter and learning. You will emerge enthused and ready to use at least three new approaches with clients the very next day.

You will learn how to apply key components of empirically-tested psychotherapies to reduce relapse and improve functioning of bipolar clients.  A simple way of organizing at least 11 “soft signs” of bipolar disorder to make your assessments rigorous and convincing will also be discussed and practiced. The proposed changes in classification of Bipolar Spectrum Disorders in DSM V, and how these changes will impact on your practice, will be explored in detail.
