The ability to engage clients should go beyond good listening skills and validation techniques if we are to provide clients with the necessary ingredients for transforming their lives. Research has consistently indicated that a successful early engagement and positive client-practitioner alliance is the strongest and most reliable predictor of positive client outcomes, both short-term and long-term. This workshop will provide you with a toolbox full of techniques useful in creating a high quality interpersonal environment to suit the unique needs of each individual client. Dr Short will highlight how, in the age dominated by artificial electronic connection, the ability to establish meaningful face-to-face relationships with our clients is at the core of health and healing.


This workshop offers important information that will help you identify what you need to do in order to succeed with client engagement. You will learn how to intensify the power of a collaborative alliance, and more effectively recruit clients’ own resources in the process of change. Additionally, if you are in private practice, this knowledge will increase your client base. If you are employed in the supportive capacity, the skills you will learn in this workshop will improve your agency’s client outcomes.


When you and a client first meet, there are numerous interpersonal factors that are negotiated quickly and often without conscious awareness. If the client gets “an uneasy feeling” upon meeting you, then the trust and positive expectations that are so essential for successful client outcome are not likely to develop.


Dr. Short will share the most essential aspects of the practitioner-client relationship and how this powerful dynamic produces lasting clinical outcomes and client transformation. You will decipher key dynamics such as dominance and submission, reciprocity, affective attunement, verification, and attachment. You will learn how to manage certain relational aspects of a therapeutic relationship without becoming diverted from the goal of achieving essential clinical outcomes. You will discover that the process of lasting change begins long before the experience of building the therapeutic alliance ends.
