SRA

Suicide Risk Assessment – Revised

In-House Workshop

With suicidal behaviours presenting a major clinical dilemma to health and allied health workers, it is imperative that professionals who have contact with people at risk of suicide know how to respond to such behaviours competently and sensitively. Mastering the skill of Suicide Risk Assessment (SRA) is one of the ways of preventing suicide and allowing intervention at an early stage, before the continuum between the first suicidal thought and the decision to complete suicide has been finalised. Suicide is difficult to predict but it is preventable.

The workshop is intended for all frontline workers who come into contact with people who may be suicidal, including those who are experienced in this area. This includes the workforce of Mental Health Services, Mental Health Rehabilitation NGOs and other NGOs, NDIS, Community Health and Child Protection Services, Correctional Services, Housing and Employment services, Domestic Violence, Services for Homeless, Centrelink, Drug and Alcohol Services, Youth Services, General Practitioners and a wide range of other services.

  • Assessment structure, risk factors, protective factors, warning signs.
  • Effective interventions in realistic situations where the risk level varies and where there might be systemic obstacles.
  • Working with suicidal clients with Borderline Personality Disorder.
  • Working with clients who self-injure.
  • Working with clients who exhibit ongoing high-risk behaviours but where the suicidal intent is not present.
  • Effectively conducting Mental State Examination.
  • Designing effective referrals to other mental health services.
  • Clinical, legal and ethical issues for practitioners, managers and organisations.
  • Management and treatment issues.

Cost for a 1-day workshop: $165 per person, plus GST. Travel and materials may incur additional charges.

Minimum 20 participants.

Engage

Engaging Clients Who Are Hard to Engage

In-House Workshop

The majority of clients seen in the social support services are not ready to create change.  So called “treatment readiness” seems to be a myth. Yet, most of the modalities we’ve been trained in, except for the Motivational Interviewing Model, assume that clients are in the action mode and that they are ready to create changes in their lives.  Practitioners are often under pressure to create outcomes and to establish goals that clients are not ready for. Hence, unproductive patterns of client–worker interactions are created; client outcomes are not reached, clients comply rather than co-operate, the real change is not achieved…..

The truth is that it is the system, the workers, who must be ready for the most challenging clients.  It is the trait of the best practitioners in the field that they adapt to the clients’ stage of readiness, and that they know how to go about it, equipped with a range of techniques that allow them to respond effectively, sensitively and with therapeutic wisdom.

This is a fast paced, highly practical training designed to teach innovative approaches and ideas to achieve successful outcomes with clients who

  • are challenging
  • court-referred
  • unmotivated
  • give you “yes, but…” responses
  • are involuntary
  • who blame others
  • who resist taking responsibility for creating change
  • who change their focus too often
  • who give you the “I don’t know” responses all the time

Such clients provide a unique challenge to professionals attempting to provide quality services to both the client and referral source.  In this workshop, you will learn what to do in order to prevent, avoid, and resolve what has traditionally been deemed “resistance.” Numerous techniques that are applicable across a wide array of clients and problems will be presented, discussed, and illustrated through video demonstrations. Emphasis will be on “how to” aspects of maximizing the potential for client movement towards goals and positive life changes. The techniques presented can be integrated with all theoretical approaches

Techniques will be offered to create impactful client-practitioner dialogue through the meticulous use of language and other skills in the moment-to-moment interactions. Those trained in traditional Motivational Interviewing will find the techniques offered will take their skills to the next level and circumvent inherent weaknesses in the approach. Upon completion of this training, participants will have a broad array of techniques to add to their repertoire to improve client outcomes and to aid in reducing the stress and burnout that accompanies their most frustrating client-worker interactions.

The training is applicable to a wide variety of settings across the system. Practitioners such as psychologists, social workers, counsellors, nurses, case managers, parole officers, support workers, employment officers, and other such professionals who have attended his training in the past, have found it extremely helpful in their work towards resolving resistance and creating client co-operation. By focusing on improved responses in the dialogue between the worker and the client, they reported higher confidence in achieving better client outcomes fast.

Cost for a 1-day workshop: $165 per person, plus GST. Travel and materials may incur additional charges.

Minimum 20 participants.

Borderline Personality Disorder: Management, Treatment and Communication Strategies

In-House Workshop

Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder are among the most challenging to work with of all people with mental health issues. They may be impulsive, unstable, non-compliant, “manipulative” and self-harming. Far too often such people are managed by under resourced services without the support or guidance of the mental health system. This situation results in poor case management, inadequate resolutions and repeated crises causing cost blowouts and stretching resources even more.

The aim of this seminar is to provide insight into the complex world of Borderline Personality Disorder and equip the participants with practical strategies for responding effectively to the complex and often perplexing behaviours displayed by these challenging clients. Clients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) remain one of the most complex types of clients for most human service professionals. Perceived as exasperating and “impossible,” clients with BPD often confuse, frighten and frustrate the workers. It does not need to be this way as there are new, innovative and empirically validated methods with proven effectiveness for managing and treating the behaviours of this often bewildering client population.

This workshop will foster an understanding of the specific challenges associated with caring for individuals with personality disorders. Practical and powerful methods for effectively managing and treating clients with BPD will be presented. It is an interactive and fun workshop. Case studies, quizzes, group tasks and movie illustrations will be used to make this not only a valuable learning experience but also an enjoyable one. The content will include description of BPD, , the etiological issues, neuroscience research of BPD, and most importantly, strategies for managing them.

Cost for a 1-day workshop: $165 per person, plus GST. Travel and materials may incur additional charges.

Minimum 20 participants.

Understanding and Responding to Personality Disorders

In-House Workshop

The clients whose problems meet the DSM-5® criteria for personality disorder can be the most challenging clients to manage and treat. They may require more time in therapy, more energy and involvement on your part, experience a greater number of life crises, and create more upset with their family, work, and social systems than virtually any other diagnostic group. Often being “sent” for therapy rather than choosing therapy, their motivation for change may be limited and their personality disorder is likely co-morbid with other exacerbating disorders.

Far too often such clients are managed by under resourced services without the support or guidance of the mental health system. This situation results in poor case management, inadequate resolutions and repeated crises causing cost blowouts and stretching resources even more.

TATRA Corporate and Allied Health Training Services has developed a workshop which will foster an understanding of the specific challenges associated with caring for individuals with personality disorders. This is an interactive and fun workshop.  Case studies, group tasks and movie illustrations will be used to make this not only a valuable learning experience but also an enjoyable one. The content will include definitions and descriptions of personality disorders and their types, a discussion about how they develop, the underlying causes behind each and, most importantly, strategies for managing them and techniques that will help you to understand them and to engage them in a caring and effective manner.

The aim of this seminar is to provide more insight into the complex world of personality disorders and equip the participants with more strategies for dealing effectively with difficult behaviours displayed by personality disordered clients.

This workshop is tailored for social workers, counsellors, nurses, housing and employment officers, community and youth workers, residential care workers, disability support, addiction counsellors and other such professionals.

Cost for a 1-day workshop: $165 per person, plus GST. Travel and materials may incur additional charges.
